Imagine sitting above a 30 meter-waterfall, with breathtaking views of a river gorge and the wild Indian Ocean. This is the setting of The Fernery Lodge, and it is difficult to decide whether to admire the incredible surroundings from the deck area with the swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym, or to enjoy it from any one of the six luxury suites. Each suite is tastefully decorated and every effort has been made to ensure our guests' comfort, from DSTV, tea and coffee facilities, and magnificent en-suite bathrooms to private decks and spa baths in the honeymoon suites. At the end of a tough day relaxing, guests can wander through the wine cellar and select a bottle of wine before making their way to the Cellar Dining Room for an excellent dinner and an equally enjoyable atmosphere.

The Chalets - beautiful and secluded

Stay at the Fernery Chalets and experience the Tsitsikamma as if you were the first to discover it. Relax in nature and treat your Soul to views of mystical waterfalls, rock pools and the vast Indian Ocean. These beautiful chalets are set apart from one another to ensure a private paradise experience and offer both B&B and self catering options. The B&B chalets sleep 2 in either twin or king size luxury, whereas the self catering chalets sleep 4 and have fully equipped kitchenettes, making them ideal for families. All the chalets are beautifully decorated and each chalet has a unique theme inspired by its magnificent surroundings. Enjoy the tranquility of the mountains and forests from the privacy of the sheltered deck or curl up in front of the cosy ceramic fireplace with a good book. End off the evening with a barbeque on your deck - simply arrange with us beforehand and we will provide everything from the ingredients to the Weber. As an alternative, the Otters Holt Restaurant is open daily and offers an excellent 4 course table d'hôte dinner menu.

An entertainment area with pool table, dart board and satellite television, as well as a swimming pool, trampoline and sauna, is at the guests' disposal. A large jacuzzi, perched on the edge of the river gorge, is a favourite with our guests, and can be enjoyed together with a bottle of wine or champagne late into the evening.

Loerie: The Loerie, with its vivid green and red colouring and striking crest, gives this Chalet its bright and beautiful colour scheme. The ceramics have been made in rainbow colours, and the headboard - the shape of a Loerie crest - has a stunning effect.

Galjoen: The Galjoen is South Africa's national fish and frequents the Tsitsikamma coastal waters. This chalet is beautifully decorated in blue and cream and has a lovely view from its deck through the gorge mouth to the sea.

In the Forest: Tranquility itself - with a moss green and white colour scheme which really makes you feel you are in the shade of the beautiful cool forests which once covered this area.

Allikreukel: This lovely silver and copper coloured shell which is found in the rock pools along the Tsitsikamma coast gives this Chalet its earthy brown and beige colour scheme. The headboard artistically depicts waving seaweed and driftwood.

Fern Cottage: An absolute must at Forest Ferns and decorated in hues of gentle greens. The prep bowl, basin and crockery are hand painted with delicate fronds of coral ferns which is one of the main export products of Forest Ferns.

Oyster Catcher: The Ouster Catcher is one of South Africa's endangered birds but frequents our Tsitsikamma coast. The Chalet which bears its name is strikingly coloured in dark tones with splashes of red.

Victorian: Pretty and cosy, this room has been decorated in warm pink and cream, and has a lovely bathroom with luxurious shrubbery and ferns tapping at the windows. Enjoy the tranquil setting of the garden from the comfort of the gorgeous bay windows and sip a glass of sherry as the sun sinks in the west.

Riverine: A magnificent room with views over the river gorge to the Tsitsikamma Mountains, Plantations and Indian Ocean. Large airy and beautifully furnished, it enables guests to relax in privacy and comfort and admire the view. The room opens onto a small private deck that overlooks the swimming pool with mountains beyond.

Spice: A dramatic room with a touch of the spice in its rich colouring, and a small private deck looking out over the river and ocean. The en suite bathroom has a magnificent view of the river gorge which you can enjoy from the comfort of a large foam bath.

Plantation: Decorated in tranquil beige and cream with a bright touch of yellow and blue, this beautiful room has bay windows into the lovely garden, and a spacious bathroom with a very luxurious feel. Relax in style in your bath tub with a glass of wine, and marvel at the beauty of nature around you.

Charleston: A honeymoon suite decorated in the dramatic style of the romantic 1920's. There is a spa bath from which you can gaze into the river gorge, and the private deck has loungers from where you can enjoy and endless view of the Indian Ocean.

Toscana: Another one of our Honeymoon Suites, it has been decorated in gorgeous shades of beige and cream for pure luxury and relaxation. Lie back in the spa bath and soak up the beauty of the river gorge, and enjoy the endless view of the Indian Ocean from the loungers on your private deck.

Blue Lily: The theme of the Blue Lily (Agapanthus africanus) has been carried through this Chalet with its blue, cream and green colour scheme. The gardens are filled with agapanthus which bloom in midsummer.

Sunbird: Sunbirds abound in the fynbos surrounding the Chalets and with their bright colours are easy to spot in the trees and shrubs. This Chalet is decorated using the bright green and yellow of the double collard Sunbirds.
